Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome è lieta di presentareBoy Looking at the Sun, la terza mostra personaledi Tal R dall’inizio della sua collaborazione con Tim Van Laere Gallery, nonché la sua primapersonale nello spazio romano della galleria.In questa mostra Tal R presenta una nuova serie didipinti e sculture.Attento osservatore che trae ispirazione dalla realtà e dall’immaginazione, il lavoro multidisciplinaredi Tal R da un lato si inserisce nella tradizione nordeuropea di Edvard Munch, Asger Jorn, PerKirkeby e Georg Baselitz, dall’altro dimostra solidi legami con suoi contemporanei come DanielRichter, Jonathan Meese e Peter Doig. Nelle sue opere numerosi sono i riferimenti alla storia e allastoria dell’arte, dall’espressionismo al fauvismo, dal simbolismo all’art nouveau, con un accennoanche all’arte scandinava tradizionale e all’outsider art. Prevale un senso di mistero, dovuto allacontaminazione tra esperienza personale e storia più ampia attraverso un puzzle visivo,finementebilanciato tra rappresentazione e astrazione, di ciò che l’artista indica con il termine ebraicoKolboknik- “avanzi”. Tal R sostiene che questo termine descriva perfettamente la sua praticaartistica: “Sto solo pescando un sacco di cose che già esistono. È una serie in continua evoluzionedi impressioni che raccolgo. Sono cose che vedo intorno a me, piccoli dettagli che scopro, come iltessuto della tovaglia in un quadro. Se si combinano impressioni diverse si ottiene una sorta distrano oggetto che va oltre il linguaggio”.Ricorrendo a media differenti, tra cui pittura, disegno, stampa, tessuti, scultura e arredamento, Tal Rmette in discussione i concetti e i preconcetti della realtà che ci circonda. Con la sua rielaborazionedel reale, costruita secondo i principi di quella che definisce lamatematica d’artista, Tal R cerca dicomprendere sia il mondofisico che vede ed esperisce in prima persona, sia gli oggetti astratti checonosce solo con il pensiero. Le sue opere raccontano di qualcosa apparentemente molto concretoefigurativo. Qualcosa di semplice, che si può descrivere a qualcuno al telefono con poche parole.Ma a uno sguardo più attento, alla semplicità si aggiunge una sensazione scomoda.Metaforicamente parlando, osservare un’opera di Tal R è come percorrere una scala senza ungradino: una lacuna che ci lascia spiazzati, a mezz’aria. L’apparenza giocosa e felice lascia il postoa una lettura più profonda e sinistra, a tratti inquietante. Come in un sogno, le sue opere rompono iconcetti convenzionali di spazio e tempo, rivelando aspetti della natura umana che rimarrebberoaltrimenti celati. È in questo aspetto rivelatore che risiede l’importanza dell’arte per la società,definita da Tal R come ilfantasma nella macchina.Tal R (°1967 Tel Aviv, Israele. Tim Van Laere Gallery Rome is pleased to presentBoyLookingattheSun. This is the third soloshow of Tal R since joining the Tim Van Laere Gallery and hisfirst show in our Roman space. Inthis exhibition, Tal R presents a new series of paintings and sculptures. Tal R is a keen observer, who takes inspiration from reality as well as his imagination. His workfitswithin the northern European tradition of Edvard Munch, Asger Jorn, Per Kirkeby, and GeorgBaselitz and has close connections to his contemporaries such as Daniel Richter, JonathanMeese, and Peter Doig, who are also his close friends. Historical and art-historical references areabundant: threads of expressionism, fauvism, and symbolism continue, as well as a nod totraditional Scandinavian art, art nouveau, and outsider art. Tal R’s enigmatic work offersintersections of personal experience and wider history through a visualjigsaw,finely balancedbetween representation and abstraction, of what the artist has termedKolbojnik, a Hebrew termfor leftovers. The artist claims this term perfectly describes what he does: “I am justfishing for alot of stuffthat already exists. It is a constantly evolving series of impressions I pick up. It’s thingsI see around me, little details I discover, like the fabric of the tablecloth in a painting. If youcombine different impressions you get a kind of weird object that’s beyond language”.Working across a diverse range of media including painting, drawing, print, textiles, sculpture, andfurniture, Tal R questions our conceptions and presumptions about our surrounding reality.Through his own systematization of the world, with what he calls his ‘artist mathematics’, he triesto understand the physical world he sees before him and the abstract objects he knows bythought alone. When you approach the works by Tal R you will usuallyfind something veryconcrete andfigurative. Something you can describe to someone on the phone, using simplewords. Then, at a closer look, you’ll discover something awkward – something sticky. It is as if youwould walk a staircase. Suddenly there is a missing step and you are in mid-air. Something thatlooked playful and happy at one moment can have a weird other reading. It can turn intosomething disturbing, even uncanny. Like a dream, his works break down the conventionalconcepts of space and time and reveal certain aspects of human nature that other disciplinescannot.
